One Book, One District 2010:

Loving Frank by Nancy Horan

The Book

Loving Frank by Nancy HoranTake a powerful, ambitious man and an unconventional mother of two. Add a clandestine romance and a suburb shaking scandal, top it all off with a shocking conclusion and you’ve got a great read. Loving Frank, by Nancy Horan, is a historical novel that explores the scandalous love affair of architect Frank Lloyd Wright and Mamah Cheney.

This year’s highly acclaimed novel has something for everyone - romance, intrigue, history, feminism and architecture. Horan artistically blends fact and fiction, illuminating Cheney’s influence on one of the greatest architects of all time. Local connections abound, not only in the setting and characters but also in the author, who is a former Oak Park resident. This is Horan’s first novel.

Horan is honored to have the book selected for the program. "There’s no doubt in my mind that I am a Midwest writer to the bone," said Horan, "So the recognition of the book by fellow Midwesterners has special meaning to me."

About One Book, One District

Whether it’s called "One Book, One City," or "One Book, One District," communities of all shapes and sizes have adopted the idea of coming together through the reading and discussion of a common book.

It began in 1998, when the Washington Center for the Book hosted author Russell Banks for four days of programs and discussion about his novel, The Sweet Hereafter. Since then, communities from all over the United States and the world have increasingly embraced the notion of civic unity through reading.

This is the ninth year for the One Book, One District program at the Palatine Public Library District. Because our Library serves several communities including Palatine, parts of Hoffman Estates and small portions of neighboring communities, we use the name One Book, One District. Since its inception, hundreds of library patrons have participated in book discussion groups, lectures, and events surrounding the books selected.

A book is a great way for the people of a community to connect with one another, to share experiences and discuss ideas. Many books are considered before one is chosen for the One Book, One District event. Our librarians look for a book that is not only a great read, but also has something which connects it to our area. We hope you will join in the fun and read this year’s selection for One Book, One District.
